Alexander and his army passed throughout the entire Orient until he came to Persia, conquering wide areas. In order to pacify the occupied areas, as well as to keep his generals in good spirits, he placed them as governors of the new provinces. They are tasked to build the provincial administration there and collect taxes.
Everyone would like to conquer as many paying provinces as possible for himself, of course. Because only then can he be seen by Alexander in the correct light with high tax revenues and win the game.
